According to the All Leatherman Kin History book it states: On December 6, 1795 Christian Hochstetler sold his 216 acres of land in Somerset County, Pennsylvania and moved to Shelby County, Kentucky where he bought 1500 acres of land near Mount Eden. Later, because of English crowding into that section, he sold out and went to Montgomery County, Ohio. The 1820 census for Orange County, Indiana records his family there as consisting of 8 persons in all, including one male slave. Christian was a Dunkard !Christian sold his farm in Lancaster County to his father in 1775. Although Lancaster County is named as his residence in the deed given by the heirs of his father in 1776, we find that he was taxed on wild land in Bedford, and Somerset County, Pennsylvania as early as 1776. On January 17, 1785, he took out two warrants for land in this county - one on Blue Lick Creek in Brothers Valley Township for 115-3/4 acres and the other on Little Youghiogheny in Brothers Valley Township for 305-1/2 acres. This last farm was doubtless the place of his residence. !On December 6, 1795 he sold his 216 acre farm in Somerset County and moved to Shelby County, Kentucky where he and his sons purchased during the next few years over 1,500 acres of land in the vicinity of Mt. Eden. On December 17, 1799, still living in Shelby County, Kentucky, he sold his Somerset County farm power of attorney. !After he had his children all comfortably settled he sold his own farm and moved to Randolph Township, Montgomery County, Ohio, where he bought 340 acres of land. Made his will April 2, 1814, which was filed May 1, 1814. His age at death around 70. His widow, Barbara Rupp, was buried on the West Bank of the Wabash River in Vermillion County, Indiana. It is said that Christian left the Kentucky settlement for Ohio because there were too many English speaking people coming in. Submitter for smitha8: James E. Christian Hostetler Family
My name is Roberta Wright Iiames and below is a brief history of some of my ancestors.
Christian Hostetler was born about February 1743/44 in Upper Bern Twp, Berks Co., Pa. He was the son of Jacob Hochstetler and Miss Lorentz who both were born in the highlands of Switzerland along the Rhine. While a young boy, he was captured by the Indians in a raid for his home. His mother, a sister and brother were killed and Christian, his father and two brothers were taken captive. His father escaped and returned to his home but the sons were held in captivity until "the end of the war" or "until peace" could be restored. His brothers were released before Christian. Jacob remained in Pennsylvania until about 1795. Shortly thereafter, he migrated to Shelby Co., Kentucky with his family. Christian was a preacher in the Tunker ‎[correct spelling]‎ which later was the Dunker Church and later the Christian Church. The arrival of the family in Shelby County was prior to 1797. Christian Hostetler removed from Shelby Co., Ky because he felt that there were too many people who did not speak German. He came to Montgomery Co., Ohio where he died and is buried.

The children of Christian Hostetler and Barbara Rupp Hostetler.

The marriage record for Adam spells his last name as "Houghstatler" and Hannah's name was spelled as "Hartman." Adam was a preacher in the Christian church as was his brother Abraham.
3. Barbara Hostetler b. July 21, 1778 in Somerset Co., Pa. and d. Jan. 22, 1850 in Orange Co., Indiana. She married Christian Leatherman on August 4, 1798 in Shelby Co., Ky.

Biography:
DANIEL LEATHERMAN is of German extraction and was born in this county March 31, 1819, being the son of Christian and Barbara ‎(Hostetler)‎ Leatherman, the father a Pennsylvanian, born February 4, 1781; the mother born July 21, 1778. They were exemplary members of the old Liberty Church, and industrious farmers by occupation. The father died August 22, 1852, and the mother January 22, 1850. Daniel's youth was passed at farming and attending to a limited extent the old subscription schools. He has made life a success, and now owns a fine farm of 269 acres. April 1, 1851, he married Margaret E., daughter of Moses P. and Mary ‎(Hardman)‎ Lewis. This lady was born in this county June 22, 1834, and has presented her husband with the following children: Oscar, born February 3, 1853, died October 26, 1856; DeWitt C., born November 1, 1854, died February 14, 1883; Viola J., born March 24, 1857, died March 12, 1883; Desdemona E., born February 17, 1859; Lloyd, born February 5, 1861; Ellis E., born January 28, 1863; Hattie L., born December 31, 1864; Ivanora, born May 5, 1867; Carrie M., born October 8, 1868, and Columbia, born March 27, 1872. Daniel Leatherman died Wednesday afternoon, May 31, 1899, at four o'clock, of congestion of the lungs and heart disease. He had been sick from the attack which caused his death, three weeks and two days, bit for several years past he had been a sufferer from heart disease and rheumatism, but was always able to sit up and walk around the house. In fact, never since he was married, forty-eight years ago, has he been so sick but that he could get out of his bed unassisted, until his last illness. He was born March 31, 1819, and was, therefore, eighty years and two months old. He was the father of ten children, five girls and five boys, six of whom, three boys and three girls, survive him, also a loving wife. Uncle Daniel, as he was known to all, was a good man, a kind husband and father. He will be missed in the family circle and among his friends in general, and to the family and all bereaved ones, the PROGRESS extends its profound sympathy. The funeral services will be held at Liberty church tomorrow ‎(Friday)‎ morning at 11 o'clock, and the remains laid away in their final resting place in the beautiful Liberty cemetery thereafter. Peace to his ashes. Submitted by Tom Agan. http://www.usgennet.org/usa/in/county/orange/obits17.htm

After only a few days illness from complications, Mrs. Ella Stratton, wife of the late James B. Stratton, died at her home here Monday night about 10:30 o'clock at the age of 81 years. Afflicted with rheumatism she had been an invalid for a period of twenty-eight years, but despite this handicap and the pain and suffering which it brought, she retained a cheerfulness and a marked interest in things about her that was noted and often mentioned by the many friends who called at her home. Mrs. Stratton was born and reared on a farm near Orleans. Following her marriage to Mr. Stratton on October 8, 1884, she went with him to Campbellsburg to reside, and here Mr. Stratton and his brother, John B. Stratton, carried on a successful hardware business for many years. One daughter, Nora, was born to them but she passed away in 1916, three years preceding Mr. Stratton's demise, which occurred in 1919. In 1924 Mrs. Stratton came to Orleans and purchased residence property and has since made this her home. Altho unable to attend its services, Mrs. Stratton had retained her membership in the Campbellsburg Baptist Church for a long number of years. Surviving are one sister, Mrs. Hugh McCoy of Orleans and two brothers, Ellis Leatherman, also of Orleans and Lloyd Leatherman of Chicago. Funeral services were conducted from the home yesterday afternoon at two o'clock in charge of Rev. Boston, pastor of the local Baptist church, following which the remains were taken to Claysville for interment in the cemetery there. http://www.usgennet.org/usa/in/county/orange/obits62.htm.

Major Daniel Bower emigrated from North Carolina to Clark county with his father, and settled near New Washington, when there were but few settlers. He married Catharine Hostetler. Major Bower was a man of considerable influence and had the confidence of his fellow citizens. He served as member of the Legislature and also as county commissioner. He was the owner of several hundred acres of land; was a farmer and trader, often trading South with boats of produce. He died at Natchez, Mississippi in 1843. His widow still lives at the old homestead.

Roberta Iiames <Guyrossjr@aol.com> report on 4/23/2002:
Just read your posting on Daniel Bower. I just pulled out the marriage records for Shelby Co., Kentucky and just looked up Elizabeth & Catherine Hostetler in the Descendants of Jacob Hochstetler 1912, both of these sources lists the following:
Hostetler, Elizabeth m. May 15, 1821 Shelby Co., Ky to Daniel Bower
Hostetler, Catherine m. May 15, 1821 Shelby Co., Ky to Jacob Henly
I believe you have Catherine as having married Daniel Bower in the bio posted ‎(above)‎. Just thought you might want this for your information.
